Camel E-Mail
The Internet is a strange and wonderful place. Since I put up the
Camel Museum page I've gotten occasional e-mail from people who found it
one way or another and were prompted to comment. It seems appropriate
somehow to make these messages a permanent part of the Camel Museum!

Trying to find out when where camels were introduced into the United States.
Reason I need to know? I do a lot of microphone work here in Virginia City,
Nevada, where the 42d annual camel races start tomorrow. I can't seem to find
anything on Camels other than 9 Bactrian Camels used to carry salt in Nevada
for a short time until the State Legislature banned them at the demand of the
teamster union, then in 1960 the first Camel race was sponsored here by the
San Francisco Chronicle, won by John Huston while directing the Misfits.
That's all I can find out. Can you help me? Thanks
Many thanks to this reader, who was kind enough to procure
an event t-shirt, program, and poster for Butterfly's camel collection!

My name is Anna Jonsson and I work as a freelance writer for a magazine called
CML. It's published by RJ Reynolds (Camel cigarettes) and we are constantly
looking for cool stories regarding camels.
Where is your camel museum?
Would you be interested in me writing a little piece about your camel
collection?
July 30, 2001
How are you doing? It has been awhile since we last spoke. I see that you
have a new camelmuseum website. It's very nice.
About a year ago, you helped me find a stuffed camel called Humphrey. Well,
I was going to see if you could help me again. I am looking for a stuffed
camel that was made by DAK about 10 years ago. He didn't have a name on his
tag and I affectionately call him "Little Camel." He is my favorite camel in
the world. My business requires that I travel all over the world and I
always take "Little Camel" on all of my trips, but unfortunately, he is
getting a bit worn.
I will try to scan a picture of him in the next few days and send it to you.
He looks like this: He is approximately 8" long, he lies on his stomach with
his legs flat on the floor. From the floor to the top of his head is about 4
to 5". In fact, he lies almost like a person that lays on their stomach
with their arms and legs stretched out. He has a beautiful one-hump and a
cute little neck and has an adorable little smile that is accented in black
thread. He has brown fur except on his face, ears, and legs which are
covered with a lighter brown, suede-like fabric. His hoofs are even divided
by the black thread. He has brown eyes and little round ears.
I've searched all over the Internet for him and haven't had any luck. Do you
know of any collectors or businesses who might have some older DAK animals?
Price is not an issue. I'll even give somebody a reward if they can find him
for me!!!
I hope you can help. I'll be in touch later and send you a scan of "Little
Camel"!
Thanks for your help. I hope I have as good of luck finding him as I did
with Humphrey.
Your camel-loving friend,
David

it's in the humps & I said that it's in the feet. please let us know were the water is
stored.

found your site while researching camels for a book I am writing. Can you tell me if
baby camels are born with any hump at all, (I realize it is stored fat) or does it
develope later? I appreciate your help. Thank you.
July 22, 2001

And the answer is... a calf or colt.
July 9, 2001

Just found your web site and I LOVE your camels. I am looking for a camel made from
stained glass. Have you any of them? A friend of mine makes stained glass pieces and
she just made a cat for me, a birthday gift for a friend who has a cat whom she loves
dearly! This stained glass cat my friend created is really lovely and looks just like
my friend's cat, Toby.
I have been searching the web all morning for a stained glass camel. I have a friend in
Boston who collects camels and I am going to have friend make one for her as a gift, to
take with me when I go to visit her in July. I'm wondering if you have any ideas which I
could use? I would like a rather "funky" looking camel... very colorful, sort of a patchwork
design. LOTS of colors. If you have any ideas or know of any web sites where I might look
for photos of colorful and unusual camels, I would very much appreciate your letting me know.
Thanks, Norma in Toronto, Ontario Canada

I am a camel collector too. and I also have hundreds! Jewelry, stuffed,
teapots, rockers, jade, pictures, cartoons etcetc, Who are you! I have
almost all the same ones as in your pictures. I have collected camels for
the last 30 years. Write back and I'll tell you the funny story of how it
all started for me (hint-it began with a Camel Experience).
Many thanks to Dede for sharing her Camel Experience, which
is too funny not to pass along:
"In 1970 I was in Iran, hitchhiking to India, when I got a ride, which collided
in the middle of the night with a camel in the desert. The tribe of nomads who
owned the camel demanded ME as equal payment for the camel, as a work animal of
equal value. It took a walk to the Soviet border and much negotiation to figure
out how to compensate them. In the end, it proved that I am actually worth
much less than a camel. This is a very abbreviated version of the true story
of how I got connected to camels."

I am a minister and during a message I made a joke about a costume I was wearing.
I said I was a camel salesman, and that my camels were in my "Camelot." After
the service, a little girl came up to me and said she wanted a camel. I tried
to tell her that it was just a joke and that I did not really have any camels.
Unfortunately, she visits us about once a month, and every time she sees me, she
asks "where's my camel?" I want to be nice to her, and so I thought to satisfy
her that I would buy her a small stuffed camel. However, I can't find a store
anywhere that sells such items. Can you help me?
I really don't want to spend more than about $10.00 if I don't have to,
after all, this is just a token gift, not a major purchase.
I look forward to hearing something from you.
Sincerely,
Camelot empty minister
Note: I'm happy to say this minister's camel lot is
no longer empty.

Our church will be conducting the Secret of the Stone Tablets Vacation Bible
School during the week of June 18, 2001 and are asking for your support.
Approximately 50 children will be attending this five-day event. We'll dig
into Bible Truths, experience a Recreation and Snacks Bazaar, discover
treasures at the Crafts Kiosk, and much more. These activities will require
additional funding and expenditures.
Without your help, we would not be able to provide as many
activities for our youth. We are looking for stuffed camel or any other
desert animal to decorate the rooms. We thank you for your contribution
and look forward to receiving your reply. Please make all checks payable to
Hosanna A.M.E. Church. The deadline for donations is June 1, 2001.

Do you want to swap links? I don't mind putting your website link on mine

PS the camels featured on my website are only about 1/4 or my collection.
I haven't updated it for years, it just takes too long. but I have some cool stuff
including camel chopsticks, and a mug/cup scrubber, a sarong which I just got
from Bali and heaps more...
Aren't camels just the best? have you ridden one before? I've ridden them about 5 times.

Hi 'butterfly'- I really liked your page on camels. I'm half-Turkish/American and it
really reminded me of 'the old country.' I heard on NPR that a new breed of camel was
discovered in China! Anyway, hope all is well. If you'd like to get some wooden camels
from Turkey to add to your collection, I have a friend who has a shop there. Take care,

I started collecting camels about a year ago when I went to see the Rockette's
Christmas show in Detroit and they had live camels on stage. I usually get
my camels from zoo gift shops. Someone recently told me I am the only one
they ever heard of who collects camels. I guess I am not alone.

November 27, 2000
just thought i would drop you a line to say how impressed i was by your camel site.
i like yourself am a collector of camels, though i haven't been collecting quite as
long as you i have managed to collect a herd of about 95, give or take a couple, i got
into collecting about 18 months ago and i now have everyone i know on the look out for
them, i'm one of those people who it is really hard to buy for so a lot of my family
and friends found it a great relief when i started collecting camels.
i got started with a camel i purchased at a flea market, i spotted him at this stall
and asked the elderly lady about him, she said her father had bought him home from the
second world war when he was shipped home after having been wounded whilst fighting for
the allies in egypt, he apperently got a couple of friends to buy some presents for his
family as he was in the hospital and couldn't make it out, her present was the camel
which she had kept for over 50 years, "he has a lot of character".
as i was leaving the flea market (which we call "swap meets"), i was approached by
another woman who had wanted to show her daughter the camel, her daughter apperently was
studying fabrics and design at university and was helping her mother out on this
particular day, so i took the camel over to show her daughter and she said that she
thought the design and the material that the camel was made of was of indian origin
and that the camel had most likely been made in india and sold to egyptian traders and
had probably made it's way to egypt via camel train as this was still quite common in
the early 40's.
so thats how i got hooked on collecting camels and ended up with 95 and still
counting (i want a thousand).
well anyway i had better go.
i hope you enjoyed the story : )

Dromedary camel(4'x 2'x 4'). This piece was made from four different exotic
woods, with 4000 hrs. of work put into it. It weighs 150 lb. This is a magnificent
piece and it truly needs to be seen by those who appreciate the awesome, majestic
camel.
Please visit the auction at www.yahoo.com. Look under yahoo auctions when you
get to the sight and then click on art then sculptures.
The title of the piece is "CAMICHAEL." You will NOT be disappointed !!!!

Pencil-Carrying Camel Convoy Blocked
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has refused to allow a convoy of
camels carrying pencils to Iraq to pass through its territory, Iraqi
newspapers said Thursday.
Quoting an Interior Ministry source, the newspapers said the pencils
were donated by the people of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a
gesture of support for ordinary Iraqis.
"Sheikh Sa'd Bin Tha'in al-Mansouri and a number of the UAE people
decided to organize a convoy of camels to transport one million pencils
to Iraq via Saudi Arabia," the source said.
He said al-Mansouri submitted a request to the Saudi embassy in the
UAE requesting permission to cross Saudi territory, but this was turned
down.
Iraq's relations with the six-member Gulf Cooperation Councila
regional alliance comprising Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain
and the UAE were strained by Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait. Kuwait and
Saudi Arabia have yet to resume diplomatic relations with Iraq.
The UAE, which joined a U.S.-led alliance that drove Iraqi troops out
of Kuwait in 1991, has led calls to end Iraq's isolation.
In 1998, the UAE began a ferry service between Dubai and Iraq's port
of Umm Qasr with United Nations permission. In April the UAE reopened
its embassy in Baghdad.

Do you know any camels as tatoos?
July 29, 2000
Hello! I've been collecting camels since grade school - a children's song
"Alice's Camel" was our camp favorite that year, and since my name is Alice I
identified with the camel theme. My collection is still small, only 25
camels, but it does include the beanie baby Humphrey, which I recently found
out was rare.
What a neat site!
June 26, 2000
I'm writing an article on the Christmas Star and I'm assuming the Wise Men
rode across the Syrian Dessert to Bethlehem on camels. What are the
limitations on the camels? How many miles could they travel in a day? How
many days in a row could they do this? If they departed from Babylon, 550
miles away how long would it take them?
June 24, 2000
I was just wondering if you can help answer that question about the camel behavior?
Does adding salt to a camel's food increase its ability to retain water?

I thought I was the only camel afficionado in the world...I stumbled on
to your site. So glad I did. It's nice to know there are other
collectors and lovers of camels such as I out in the world...Maybe we
should form a club?...Best wishes to you and HELLO to camel lovers
everywhere.::))

I just stumbled into your site thru ask.com and searching for camels. I
saw the comments from the various collectors and I too am a collector
with over 400 various camels. I even have a camel site if you would care
to see it. I think I have one of the largest collections of camel
clipart on the web. I also would be interested in linking your site on
my links page and would be honored of you would consider linking mine.
I saw one comment that said something about having camel collectors have
a place to get together online....do you know of a place? I would be
most interested in discussing our hobby with other collectors...
Additionally I have a link on my site to a woman in Oregon that has two
live camels and raises Llamas....She has a male Dromadary called Gobi
and a female Bactrian called Butterscotch.
The addy to my site is...

HI Butterfly,
My name is Gil Riegler. I am starting the first camel dairy in the United
States. A friend introduced me to your web page on camels and I would like my
page to be linked there once it is up. I will be at cameldairy.com.
I am still working on the page. Well... I am actually still reading the first
pages of my program guide book....
I cut crystals to make the money to buy the camels that I will need to
produce the milk. Very expensive ... and very time consuming.
Just wanted to introduce myself,
Have a great new year!

I just love this site...LOVE it. Its wonderful. What fun
Can you tell I am fond of camels? I LOVE this site.

we need a place to congregate!!!! LOVE this page...and I too collect
camels. Show some more of your pieces, please.

I am looking for a poem about the camel's ability to go long periods of
time without drinking. This poem is used by recovering alcoholics as a
tool and I was hoping you can help me find it. Thanx.
And the answer is...
The camel each day goes twice to his knees
He picks up his load with the greatest of ease.
He walks through the day with his head held high
And stays for that day completely dry.
January 23, 1998
Dear butterfly,
I'm desperately looking for some one-humped camel gifs and I can't find
anything useful on the internet or in clipart. Can you help me??? Thanks.
Do you know how much water a one humped camel can drink at a time? I was
asked this question just now, I wonder whether you know.
January 22, 1998
Very Interested in raising real Camels. If you have any information that
might help please send. Thanks.
December 29, 1997
My name is David and I'm a 33 yr old electrical engineer that lives
in Cincinnati, Ohio. Like you, I collect camels of all sorts especially
porcelain, brass, glass, and other figurines. My wife recently ordered
a stuffed camel from Stuffed Animal World. I have never been much into
collecting stuffed animals although I do have a couple of camels that
are stuffed. My wife gave the Camel as a shower gift to her friend that
is expecting a baby. As I say, I was never a collector of stuffed
animals, but this one was *special*. He was a two humped camel about 10
to 12" tall, named Humphrey, made by a company called Gund. After
seeing it, I had her try and order me one from Stuffed Animal World
on-line and as luck would have it, they have sold out of them and do not
plan to restock him. Unfortunately, she had given the camel away before
she had tried to reorder or I would not be in the dillimae that I am
now. Would you know of such a camel and where I might be able to find
it? As you can see, I am desperate.
I also would be interested in knowing if you know of any good
catalogs (on-line or off-line) where a camel enthusiast like myself
might be able to find some camel artifacts. I prefer camel statues
whether they be porcelain, brasss, glass, etc. I have often bought some
forms that I have painted and decorated myself and actually prefer these
since they can be customized to suit my taste.
Looking at your web page it looks like we have similar interests and
I like both Dromedaries (my favorite) and Bactrian camels whether they
be figurines, paintings, pictures, etc. If you have any information
that may assist me in my search I would appreciated it, and perhaps one
day I can return the favor.
Here is a pic of me and my wife riding camels of course I sorta doctored
it up. :)

I saw the following article, and thought of you ...
Loan repayable in camels:
NIAMEY (Reuters) - Libya is to give neighboring Niger a loan of $16
million, which will be repayable in part by the delivery
of camels, Niger's government daily Le Sahel reported.
The loan will be made at the start of the year by the Libyan Arab
Foreign Bank, according to the newspaper's Wednesday
edition.
It will be repayable over 10 years, with 2-1/2 years grace, and the 3
percent interest will be payable part in cash and part
through the export of 1,500 camels a year.

So, you love Camels too, huh? My son, Nick (4-1/2), has affectionately
nicknamed them "Chubbies." I don't know where he picked that up. He got
to ride on some in Tunisia and has been in love with them ever since.
We've got camel everything. And, if we don't have it -- I know where to
get it! If you're looking for something, let me know. Since I've had to
learn about these magnificent creatures too, I have really learned to love
and respect them. It would be an "honor" to be of service to you in your
camel quest!
(Being in New Mexico) Do you have, like, any REAL camels that you've
collected? Have you found any other cool camel sites?
August 8, 1997
I am new to Cyberspace and I just wanted to thank you for your amazing
page on camels! Have you done anything similar for unicorns or grasshoppers?
My kids just love what you've done for camels.
July 18, 1997
Could you give me some information about the feeding mechanism of the
camels? Could you explain me how camels do cudding? What is the function of
sensitive kidneys to the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin and the high
tubular reabsorption in the kidneys? How are they effect the camelsthat
they produce low volume of urine? If you answer my questions as soon as
possible I would be very happy.I am looking forvard to your message.
June 28, 1997
Butterfly: I was just looking through the WWW for camel stuff, when I came upon your
camel page. I have been collecting camels (one hump) since my early teens as
well. I am now 35. I never thought there was another person on earth that
collected camels. Like you say, everybody has to have a hobby.
So, I just wanted to e-mail you and say that I think your camel hobby is
great. I know that when I go into stores and ask them if they have camel
figurines... I get the strangest looks.
If you know of a great place to get camels...let me know?
April 20, 1997
I am a camel figure collector. I am a very passionate collector and may I ask
if you could send me some pictures of your figures, if it isn't an inconvenience.
